Le monde fransaskois
Saskatchewan's Francophone world
As of the 2021 census, 52,000 Saskatchewan residents claim working knowledge of the French language. Originally, the province's Francophone population was concentrated in a few rural bloc settlements, but urbanization and immigration have spread the community across the province.
This handy map shows exactly where Saskatchewan's Francophone population is distributed, making it easy to pick out the historic rural communities that were once the cradle of French Canadian culture in the West.
Note that this map uses language ability data, NOT mother tongue, NOR language currently spoken at home (all of which are ALSO counted in the Canadian census). In practice, that means its numbers are bolstered by many French immersion students who are first-generation learners.
This map also shows the electoral divisions of the Assemblée communautaire fransaskoise, the representative body of the Fransaskois people.
