Winnipeg Maps
Discover the fine details of Canada's halfway point
The historic industrial centre of Western Canada, flood-prone Winnipeg has been subject to a number of massive engineering projects over the years. In the 1960s, the city saw the excavation of the Red River Floodway, a pharaonic artificial channel ringing in at about 60% the volume of a Panama Canal. In the 2010s, modern airborne LIDAR elevation mapping led to the proliferation of ultra-high-resolution elevation data in most of Southern Manitoba.
LIDAR is sort of a miracle technology: it can see straight through vegetation and buildings at extremely high resolution. This makes it invaluable for 21st century disaster response planning. In Grasslands National Park, where I live, a LIDAR scan of the park is capable of revealing individual prairie dog mounds.
In Winnipeg, the Earth has been marked by natural and artificial processes in equal measure. The more you know the city and its environs, the more you'll discover!
